I’m talking about Duty free sections of the airports. For example are D&G or Gucci products priced lower in the airport relative to those in the city of Rome or Milan?
Nope, from personal experience I would say most definitely not.
Although you’ll be happy to know that there are a couple of shops (mostly in the center of Rome, Milan and Florence) displaying "Euro Free Tax" signs, where the shops deduct the IVA (VAT/Tax) then and there, plus they handle the paperwork for you (for Non-EU citizens of course). Obviously you can shop anywhere and later try to can claim the (usually between 12% and 35%) IVA back from the Italian Government – but I should warn you, the bureaucratic process is daunting.
Alternatively, if you are looking for (really) good deals on some big Italian brands, I would really suggest that visit the Outlets around the periphery of Rome.
The biggest and most popular being the Castel Romano outlet.
